Brunch Foods: Ranked

By Erin Deborah Waks

It’s not the first time I’ve written about brunch and it certainly won’t be the last, but today I feel a very serious matter is at hand: what is, in fact, the best brunch food around?

While I’m fully aware individual tastes mean there cannot actually be an objective response to the query, that’s never been something to stop me putting my own spin on things. And so, without further ado, here are, in my view, the top brunch options - ranked.

5. Cinnamon buns

You might be surprised to find these so low on the list but, as a non-brunch defined option, you should just be happy they made the cut at all. They’re a great option to pair with a walk or coffee for a more casual morning snack, but are nonetheless incredibly delicious. See mine below, from buns at home.

4. Granola, fruit and yoghurt bowls

Underrated according to some, overrated to others, I fall firmly into the first camp. I’m partial to a yoghurt bowl as long as they’re done right. Flora + Fauna in Lisbon has delicious granola, smoothie and acai bowls if you ever find yourself in that corner of the world.

3. French toast

Perhaps not the most common option, French toast or eggy bread (known in France as pain perdu) is, quite frankly, one of the most fabulous things ever invented. I’m a fan of using day-old challah bread from Friday Night Dinner to make mine, or sourdough on the brink of going stale. Top with berries and voila - a gourmet meal. At 11am. These ones, from The Breakfast Club, might just be the best ones out there.

2. Smoked salmon, avocado and eggs on sourdough

You’ll have heard me say before, a classic is a classic for a reason. In any format, this combo is a winner. From homemade varieties to fancy Eggs Benedict, you won’t even realise it’s one of the healthiest choices out there.

1. Coffee

Not technically a food. But still, in my book, the winner. Deserving of the top spot.
