Best Romcoms Of All Time
By Erin Deborah Waks
I’m not, in the interest of projecting a classy, erudite image of myself, going to lie to you. I love romcoms. Get me a glass of wine, a hot bath and Renee Zellweger on my screen any day. A giant bucket of popcorn, a duvet and Julia Roberts any evening. A cappuccino the size of my head, my best girlfriends and Meg Ryan at pretty much any moment in time.
And, I won’t lie to you - my taste in them is pretty middle of the road. I firmly believe the classics are classics for a reason, and should be revered in the canon of Great Movies. While a Hallmark Christmas romcom or modern adaptation might be great, I find the most joy in the rewatched classics of the 90s and 00s.
Oh and, one more confession. My title is undoubtedly misleading. It should read Best Romcoms Of All Time In This Twentysomething Romantic Girl’s Humble Opinion. It just didn’t quite have the same ring to it…
Notting Hill
‘I'm also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.’ Need I say more?
2. How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days
If you don’t want to watch this film for that yellow dress alone, watch it for the onscreen chemistry between Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey.
3. About Time
This is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful depictions of the kind of ordinary love we often miss when watching big, loud displays of affection. It is perfection itself.
4. When Harry Met Sally
As an avid Nora Ephron fanatic, I love all her films and books. But this one, combining a romantic heroine, non-romantic hero and Meg Ryan’s flawlessness, is top tier.
5. My Big Fat Greek Wedding
I can’t count the amount of moments in this film where I could replace the word ‘Greek’ with ‘Jewish’ and feel like I’m watching my own family onscreen. Hilarious and lovable at every moment.
6. The Mirror Has Two Faces
One of the most underrated of film, this Barbra Streisand movie does wonders for the depiction of almost-beautiful, unlucky-in-love women. I watch it and feel just a little less alone.
7. Mamma Mia 2
The ultimate feel-good girls-night classic. Only just beats its prequel.
8. Friends With Benefits
This is a modern movie I can get behind, because it shows just how much fun one can have.
9. He’s Just Not That Into You
I often find myself remembering this film when experiencing the trials and tribulations of my own dating life. It may be cliche but, in truth, it has some really bloody good advice.
10. Eat Pray Love
As a fellow travel-lover and self-development fan, I think this is a beautiful depiction of a journey that might just inspire your own.
